Since he has a War Grave headstone it is presumed that his death in 1946 was as a result of injuries or a condition resulting from war service.


His life

Arthur Robert West was born on 5 November 1917, Grayshott, Hampshire. In civilian life he was a Carpenter & Joiner.

His father was Wilfred Edward West born 7 December 1888, Titchfield, Hampshire. He was the son of John West (1847-1917) of Titchfield, Hampshire and  Elizabeth Bounds (1854-1929). He was a  Builder's General Foreman.

His mother was Edith Lydia B Winter was born 28 July 1892 Sarisbury Green, Titchfield, Hampshire.

Wilfred and Edith were married on 24 June 1910 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

His siblings were: Wilfred Edward West (1912, born in Montreal, died 1982) and John (1926-2000).

In the England & Wales Register 1939 he was living with his parents and brother Wilfrid at 18 Cleeve Road, Leatherhead, Surrey.

In October 1940 the marriage of Arthur and Enid M Ellis was registered in Surrey Mid Eastern District.

In 1939 Enid Ellis was living with her parents at 23 Barnett Close, Leatherhead and was working as a Cable manufacture machine hand. Her birth was registered in January 1921 in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, Wales. Her father was Stanley Ellis, born  6 June 1894, a Railway Permanent Way Labourer. Her mother was Annie M Richards, born 8 January 1896.

After the war

A Roman Catholic, Arthur's family chose to have him buried in the churchyard of Our Lady of Sorrows, Effingham, Surrey when he died in 1946.  

His mother Edith died on 22 November 1952 in Leatherhead. His father remarried in 1953 and died in 1967.

Arthur's widow Enid had moved to Ashtead at the time of his death in 1946. She died in 2006 and is buried in the same grave - see above.
